Action research, documentation and to articulate farmer’s knowledge system is the key to bring newer perspectives to the dominant institutional paradigms of agricultural research – where every farm land is a research station and every farmers has a wealth of knowledge and the knack to innovate. Through action research at the grass roots strengthening the capacity of local groups and informal institutions is the objective of MINI - by undertaking applied research on the use of agricultural diversity to meet the needs to farming communities and protect the environment.

Focus Description
1 Thematic Projects should broadly deal with “revival and promotion of millet-based, traditional mixed cropping systems”. Strategies and methodologies could differ from project to project.
2 Crop On farm conservation of millets and millet cropping systems that include pulses, beans, greens, oil seeds, amaranth, etc.
3 Climatic Dryland; rainfed farming systems.
4 Geographical Hilly / Mountain regions; Semi-arid and arid regions.
5 Communities / Social groups The NGO/ CBO should work with marginalised communities (Adivasi; Dalit; poor women farmers; etc).
6 Approach The project should facilitate “farmer led initiatives” by organising, mobilising and motivating farmer groups to promote millet-based mixed cropping systems.
