Anthra is a resource group that was started by a team of women veterinary scientists in 1992 to address the myriad constraints that faced rural livestock rearers. In 1995, Anthra was registered as a trust with an all-women governing board.

In Sanskrit, Anthra means an expression of joy, and in Hindustani classical music, Anthra is the opening verse.

The initial aim of the organization was to search for alternative systems for delivering livestock health and management practices to poor people, especially women in rural areas. Today, Anthra is a resource centre offering training, research and advocacy initiatives in the areas of livestock, biodiversity and people's livelihood.

The seed of Kudumbam was sown way back in 1980 in a village where river Cauvery steps into Tamil Nadu, where our involvement in facilitating problem focused education, street theater, participatory learning and documenting traditional knowledge, deepened our insights. Our involvement was not only to create awareness on the magnitude of these issues but also to initiate participatory technology development, facilitating a process of farmers’ innovations and community based alternatives. Our efforts have been in reviving community management of water bodies, conservation of community bio-diversity, community seed banks, community green banks, and facilitating people financed institution.

Sahaja Samrudha (SS) started as a farmer initiated group to exchange ideas, seeds and share knowledge on sustainable agriculture. The formation of SS was the culmination of their individual efforts into a more exciting and powerful force to make sustainable agriculture a way of life for the farming community.

Since inception SS has been establishing contacts, building networks, facilitating exchange of experience and developing programmes based on the needs of farmers of specific regions. These pioneer farmers encourage other farmers to grow top quality produce and work in harmony with a healthy ecosystem, encouraging nature’s protective network of soil micro organisms and beneficial insects to help them farm successfully.

Beej Bachao Andolan (BBA) is a non-formal collective of farmers and activists, working to negate ‘modern but destructive' agriculture practices, search and conserve indigenous seeds for agricultural diversity and rejuvenate traditional farming practices all over Uttaranchal. Using traditional practices, the collective produces over 200 varieties of rajma (kidney beans), over 350 varieties of rice, including lal basmati, and other local crops.

The genesis of BBA goes back to the 1970s and 1980s, when High Yielding Variety (HYV) seeds and cash-crop driven agriculture were being rapidly adopted across the country, destroying traditional farming.  A  time came when in Garhwal, as a result of this new way of farming, crop yields of the HYV seeds deteriorated, soil fertility declined, and dependence on toxic chemicals for farming increased. The ecosystem was also severely damaged.

A group of activists, identifying the negatives of   these new technologies in agriculture, formed the Beej Bachao Abhiyan, later re-named Beej Bachao Andolan.
